Girlguiding UK Promise Includes Thumbelina Lyrics

Girlguiding UK are replacing their traditional promise with lyrics from the opening song of the Don Bluth film “Thumbelina”.  The promise used to say:

“On my honour I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and the Queen
To help others at all times
To obey the Guide Law”

The new promise reads:

“You’re sure to do impossible things,
If you follow your heart.
You’re sure to fly on magical wings,
When you follow your heart!”

The consultation earlier this year involved nearly 44,000 Girlguiding UK members and non-members.  Chief Guide Milly Slowgrove commented:

“It’s not like we’re unknowingly influenced by philosophical assumptions that we don’t understand.   We consciously endorse the premise that children need to be true to themselves and develop their own beliefs, not have values foisted on them by adults.  This is now expressed at the heart of our organisation; our young members are now free to metamorphose into the moral butterflies that we know they can be.”

The invisibly-robed Emperor was unavailable for comment.
