Why is this?
The heart of self-righteousness is thinking that our efforts to obey God are ever equivalent to doing everything that God says we should do. Whatever obedience we can achieve is only ever an act of repentance and faith in God, it is necessary, but it is not the whole thing. But when we bring what we have, our faith in Him moves God to transform our offering into the real thing.
The boy with 5 loaves and 2 fish understood this. He saw the predicament, he understood the problem, 5000 hungry people. It never crossed his mind that his tiny offering would feed everyone but he brought it anyway. That is child-like faith.
